Question by Ling: For doing the karyotype lab, is the sex chromosome the smallest?
How do I know if it is a sex chromosome according to its size and shape and the centromere?

I'm assuming you are looking at a human karyotype.
In a normal human there are two sex chromosomes, XX or XY. The X chromosome is quite large, and Y chromosome is one of the smallest chromosomes. It's easier to find them in a male karyotype as they will be the chromosomes with no partner.
Otherwise, look at the links below for a guide to what they should look like. It will depend a little on how your chromosomes are stained.
